The UK's largest independent supplier of car parts with a turnover of £1 billion per annum was struggling to understand the impact of price changes across its 500,000 sales lines.
With 12 major customers giving 6,000,000 potential
price combinations the company needed to understand the margin impact of price changes.
The company had historically utilised
multiple Excel spreadsheets broken down into various product categories in order to store this information.
Price changes were taking a week to compute utilising Excel which was exceptionally
inefficient and hindering price changing decisions.

James designed and set up an Access database which enabled the same exercise to be completed,
reducing computation time to half a day with a methodology that was
much more robust.
The previous Excel method required end users
to input formulas and look ups which could result in potential
errors - James database design just required the clicking of
mouse buttons to import and process data automatically.
James trained accounts personnel on how to use Access to complete
the process and provided detailed instruction manuals for reference.
